Compared to the Kindle 3, the latest Kindle is a much more svelte and pared-down ereader. Gone is the odd-looking keyboard and what you are left with is a thin and sleek device.
If Amazon has gone to all this trouble to keep the Kindle so slim, the last thing you want to do is add unnecessary bulk to it by using a case. Yes, by all means use a case, but the Tuff-Luv Natural Hemp case adds just a little too much bulk for our liking.
The reason for all the bulk is down to the case’s unique selling point, that it is made from natural hemp. While this gives the book-like case certain eco credentials, it also means that the Kindle is lost in a sea of sandy-coloured hemp and faux leather. At 112g, the case won't weigh you down too much while reading, though it does add significant weight to the Kindle which is just 166g on its own.
The Kindle itself fits into a faux leather harness, and is secured at the top by a Velcro strap. All the buttons and ports are left accessible, but we found that pressing the screen lock button was quite awkward while we were using the case single-handed.
On the opposite side of the case you’ll find a business card holder and a document holder (again in beige faux leather), as well as a pen holder in the spine of the case. All helpful additions which don’t add much bulk to the case.
When not in use, the case is secured with a button clasp and you should get sufficient protection from bumps and scrapes while the carrying the Kindle in your bag. While reading, you can hold the case as a book with the cover open, but if you want to fold the cover over, there is no position where it fits comfortably, which is a little annoying,
The case feels really nice and the natural hemp certainly makes a nice change from the plastic, faux-leather and leather cases we normally see. While you wouldn't call the design on the front exactly stunning, it is unobtrusive and overall we really like the look and feel of this case.
The Tuff-Luv Natural Hemp Kindle 4 case is something a little different among the vast sea of plastic and leather-like cases we normally see. Thanks to the hemp it feels great, and we even like the basic look of the case too. However, thanks to the use of hemp, the case is a bit on the bulky side and the awkwardness of getting to the screen lock button is also a negative point. But, if you are a vegetarian looking to do some undercover reading in the desert, then look no further than the Tuff-Luv Natural Hemp Kindle 4 case.
