Toshiba Chromebook – Battery Life

The first generation Chromebooks usually struggled with battery, but thankfully things have dramatically improved this time round. One of the chief benefits of packing the new Intel Haswell processor is being able to vastly improve battery life. Toshiba claims its Chromebook can manage up to eight hours and 30 minutes of putting in the same realms as the Acer C720 but less than the 14-inch HP Chromebook's touted 9 and a half hours.

Running Netflix continuously at 50 per cent screen brightness, it manages closer to 7 hours so it's not quite as mammoth as Toshiba suggests when put under considerable strain. But it is still a good showing and matches the current crop of Chromebooks for making it through the day.

Should I buy the Toshiba Chromebook?

Not to sound like a broken record but if you can buy into Google’s concept of working entirely in browser windows and getting the most out of it when hooked up to the Wi-Fi, Toshiba's Chromebook is another affordable laptop we'd happily recommend.

It's the first 13-inch Chromebook available and the extra screen estate and keyboard space makes it a far more enjoyable Chromebook to use than the 11-inch models. Crucially, it delivers slick performance, good battery life and even serves up some decent speakers to make up for yet another below-par display and a troublesome clickpad.

For the same £249, there are not many standout alternatives to consider. You'd have to more than double that figure to get a decent Windows 8-running laptop like the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite for example. Then you won't have to make the same compromises on onboard storage and the not so fantastic screen. If you are sold on Chromebooks though, this is one of the best we've tried.

Verdict

Toshiba’s first Chromebook proves that 13-inch laptops make a far nicer home for improving Google's Chrome operating system.
