What is the Toshiba Camileo X-Sports?

The Toshiba Camileo X-Sports is a pocket-sized action camera that features a 2-inch display, a host of accessories like waterproof casing and a wrist-worn remote control to make this snapper primed for filming in of your sporting activities.

Launching before Christmas just in time for the skiing season, the X-Sports is priced at £229 making it a cheaper alternative to the GoPro Hero Black Edition (£359) and the Silver Edition (£279).

Toshiba Camileo X-Sports – Design

Clearly inspired by the GoPro cams, the X-Sports is a tiny little snapper. It weighs just 94g making it one of the lightest action cams on the market. It’s largely made from a rubber silicone material, but at the front has a veneer-like finish giving it a far more expensive look.

Up front is the wide angle lens and 12-megapixel CMOS sensor for stills while around the back is the 2-inch LCD display and set of four buttons lined up alongside it. On the right side is a compartment that hides away the Micro USB and Micro HDMI ports and there's a tripod mount hole on the bottom of the camera. The sole recording button sits on the top of the camera.

The camera on its own is shockproof to 1.5m and feels, well-built and durable enough to take out swimming, surfing or skiing.

Toshiba Camileo X-Sports – Features

The Wi-Fi enabled action cam can shoot in full HD 1080p at 60fps and 120fps and at a lower 720p HD resolution.  There’s an electronic image stabilizer to stop footage from looking shaky plus a 10x optical zoom to get up close to pictorial targets.

There's burst mode to pick out the best shots, a time lapse mode, the ability to shoot continuous photos and take photos and video at the same time.

The Toshiba Wi-Fi Connect Android and iOS app adds extra functionality including using your smartphone or tablet display as a viewfinder and a remote control. You can also adjust mic sensitivity, picture resolution and easily share video to Facebook and YouTube.

In terms of accessories, Toshiba has this department well covered. For activities out in the pool or the sea, the waterproof casing lets you shoot up to 60m deep matching the GoPro's waterproof credentials.

There’s a wrist worn remote control that features two large oversized buttons to and an adjustment strap to wear it straight over your arm or over a jacket. It’s waterproof up to 3 metres, shockproof up to 1.5m and boasts a battery life of around 5 hours.

There’s a whole host of sticky, adhesive mounts for fastening the camera to a helmet, bike, surfboard or skateboard. You can also buy head and chest straps and Toshiba told us they will cost around £50.

The X-Sports can manage around 1.5 hours of battery life when you are shooting at 60fps and around two hours when you are filming at 30fps.

First impressions

We of course didn’t get an opportunity to take the Toshiba Camileo X-Sports for a swim or a bike ride, but we did spend enough time with the camera and the app to see that they are both very easy to use. There’s a whole host of accessories Toshiba will be supplying when the action cam launches later this year to cover a wide range of sports.

The Toshiba Camileo X-Sports is compact, easy to use and comes with a host of accessories to rival the GoPro. The true test will be in the shooting quality, but so far, we are impressed with what we've seen from this tiny little action cam.
