Read speeds are even more impressive with the Handy Steno taking an incredible three seconds to read back the 100MB Excel file, compared with seven seconds on the Adtec device. The Apacer was twice as fast reading back the 105MB of MP3s as well, turning in a time of six seconds, while the Adtec managed 13 seconds. Finally, reading the 205MB of mixed files took only 13 seconds on the Apacer, compared with 27 seconds on the Adtec Data Stick.

So, it looks like Apacer is right – this is the World’s fastest USB flash memory key. And with a price of only £49.95 including VAT it’s not going to break the bank either. That said, at this capacity I don’t think that this kind of lightning fast performance is that warranted. I can’t say that I would be bothered by having to wait seven seconds instead of three seconds to copy 100MB. In fact I’m more likely to be worried about the size of the device in my pocket, and here the Adtec Data Stick wins.

However, if you can afford to go for the 512MB version or even the 1GB model (£94.95 and £194.95 respectively) then the performance will become much more important, if not vital. There’s no doubt, that if I had the money, I’d buy a 1GB Apacer Handy Steno HT203 and make full use of the blistering speed. But for a 256MB memory key, I’d go for something a little smaller.

Verdict

The Apacer Handy Steno is amazingly fast, but at this capacity you won’t really make the most of the performance. In 512MB or 1GB guises though, this would be the ultimate flash memory device, if you can justify spending that amount of cash.
