So there you have it, seven of the latest DVD writers doing battle for supremacy. If you’re looking for a drive to backup your data or make DVD movie discs any one of these devices will be able to address your needs.

What separates these drives from each other though is how versatile they are or how fast they are. Our two winners cover both those bases with one offering all the versatility you need and the other providing ultimate DVD writing performance.

Editor’s Choice

It was pretty much impossible to consider any drive other than the LG GSA-4040B for the Editor’s Choice award. This is the only drive on the market that can write to every type of DVD media. The performance isn’t the best on test, but considering the incredible versatility offered by this unit this can be forgiven.
But even more amazing than the array of formats supported by the LG is the price. With a street price of only £115 this drive really is a steal and we’d suggest that you snap one up as soon as you can.

Recommended

As far as value and versatility go, the LG pretty much wipes the floor with every other drive on test. So we decided to give the Recommended award to a product that wasn’t cheap but offered unrivalled performance and quality.
The Plextor PX-708A is a stunning DVD writer that supports eight-speed writing to DVD+R media and four-speed writing to DVD+RW. With this in mind it will leave the other drives behind when it comes to performance.
It’s true that you have to pay dearly for this high-speed writing, and at £195.93 you’ll need pretty deep pockets to buy one. But when it comes down to it, if money were no object, everyone in the TrustedReviews office would have one of these in their PC.

Just as we were finishing this group test a few more DVD writers landed at the TrustedReviews offices but it was too late to include them this time. However, there will be a follow up test with these drives in the very near future.
