Thanks for the information.
The N7700 was indeed the first 7 bay NAS available, but the Qnap TS-809 (core2duo and 2GB of RAM)has 8 bays and has been available since last spring, so the N7700/N7700 pro isn't leading the pack anymore, just catching up. As no one (that I know) has 10GB ethernet, it would be interesting to compare the two models with a standard gigabit network, especially given the difference in architecture (Thecus uses jumbo frames, Qnap doesn't). The TS-809 and N7700 are on par performance wise, but the Qnap hads the edge from a storage point of view (important as RAID6 is the only safe option with that many bays if the capacity of the drives is 1TB or more). I tried both and kept the Qnap, as its firmware is MILES ahead from the Thecus (better interface, much more functionality). Has Thecus updated its firmware, that comes from the last century?

I think manni has a point. I have experience with my 509 Pro and the interface looks better then Thecus. They still got more to do to catch up in firmware besides hardware.

I surveyed both Thecus and QNAP for a NAS server for my department. Although Thecus’ interface is not as good, I think it is still considered easy to use and I have no problem finding the configuration options. Most important of all is performance. My department has 10 people and our new N7700SAS is flawless and fast, no complaint so far. So I bought another Thecus for my home. It is interesting to see the 10GbE support as the price Ethernet adaptor is dropping dramatically and the 10Gb switch will soon. My MIS guys are looking into 10Gb storages now. Big brands are VERY expensive. I think Thecus’ got interesting design and good price, I hope. Look forward to see some performance figures.

@Manni, Thecus has come back to us regarding your firmware query saying:

"On the issue of interface, Thecus will release a new version next month (November) for easier management and better presentation. Users can apply to current models with easy and free firmware upgrade."

So fingers crossed that'll be fixed soon.
