Netgear has announced 'Stora', the first truly affordable network attached storage device made specifically to target mainstream consumers. The nuts and bolts are very simple: Stora can hold two 3.5in hard drives and comes with a single 1TB HDD installed with the extra bay available for automatic expansion. As with other NAS, the Stora can hold photos, music, movies, files and backup data. This can then be accessed from any computer on the network. Independent, safe and always available.
Where the magic happens however is online since Netgear has created 'MyStora.com', a site with a graphically driven UI which enables remote access to your files from any Internet connected device be it a PC, laptop or even smartphone. From here you can share content with friends and colleagues and copy it to another computer. Clever stuff.
"We strongly feel that Stora exemplifies the next-generation of consumer storage devices," said Netgear network storage marketing director Drew Meyer. "Stora is most definitely a platform for everyone. Stora gives users the features they need today with a consumer-friendly user interface and price point, making their media available to them and their designated friends and families anytime, anywhere".
Stora is Mac, PC and Linux compatible, has centralised iTunes library support, works with Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and Picasa to save and upload content and supports Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) enabled photo frames, XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles and iPhone and Blackberry handsets.
The best part however is the price with Netgear pricing Stora at just £189.99 - about one third of the price you'd expect to pay for most NAS boxes while a three year warranty comes as standard. Yes, storage can be very cool indeed...

My previous experience with the WD Mybook drives will not let you access any music or movie files from outside of your home network.
Any ideas if Netgear will allow ... more

If it runs at a similar speed to the ReadNAS Duo, the networking will be at least as fast as any USB connected drive at around 22MB/sec

@kdot - guessing really from the space between the drives that looks to be about 1.5 x the drive height, plus the space between the edge of the drive and the case.
