Today Seagate shows there is still life in the moving parts sector with the announcement of the 'Barracuda XT', the first HDD to support the new SATA 6Gbps standard. The desktop focused XT will come in capacities up to two terabytes, contains 4x 500GB platters, spins at 7,200rpm and has a hefty 64MB of cache.
As for the performance, the XT delivers breakthrough speeds for an HDD with Seagate quoting a sustained data transfer rate of 140MB/sec. On the flip side, this actually falls well within the bandwidth of SATA II (300MB/sec) and certainly doesn't trouble SATA 6Gbps (600MB/sec). The new standard is backwards compatible with SATA (130MB/sec) and SATA II, so you won't need a new motherboard to snap one up.
Speaking of which, Seagate is expected to launch the Barracuda XT line this month with the 2TB edition retailing for approximately $299 (£185). This isn't a huge premium on SATA II drives, then again given compatibility here is more of a technicality at this point it probably shouldn't be.

I'll not buy any 2TB HDD till prices didn't reach £100. It's gonna be soon :)
