Unlike the largest SSDs, the very highest capacity HDDs tend to come with a price penalty though this is something Hitachi has just eased...

With the launch of the 'Deskstar 7K2000' series the diverse mega corporate has created the industry's first two terabyte 7,200rpm hard drive. It couples this increased spin speed with 32MB of cache and the ubiquitous 3Gbps SATA (II) interface.

Perhaps just as handy as the extra speed however is a patented ramp "load/unload design to increase shock protection, and Thermal Fly-height Control (TFC) to maintain a consistent fly-height during the read/write process" which should mean improved data reliability. Hitachi has also made efforts to reduce power consumption with its proprietary 'Hitachi Voltage Efficiency Regulator' (HiVERT - really!) which it claims will cut idle power usage by 10 per cent for a best in class power efficiency of 4.4 watts.

Perhaps the real question however is whether such innovations can hold off SSDs for yet another year especially given 512GB and 1TB SSDs are starting to make increasingly regular appearances. That said these SSDs come in form factors such as the remarkable (and terrifyingly expensive) OCZ Colossus so I'd say there's still plenty of life in the old dog yet...
