There have been many challengers to Intel's game changing line of SSDs and with the likes of OCZ, Corsair, gamers' delight Fusion-io and now storage giant Western Digital all piling on the pressure there's only one thing to do: roll out generation 2.0.

The Inquirer reports new Intel SSDs will soon be announced and they'll be the first based on the company's 34nm NAND chips which should mean larger capacities, reduced power consumption, even faster performance and also a - wait for it... - drop in price!

80GB, 160GB and 320GB models are said to make up the new line which fits nicely with the 320GB Intel SSD rumour we heard back in January. Yes, we'd love to see a really affordable 40GB version for netbooks but it seems companies are reluctant to drop down from their previous capacity entry points.

Equally exciting is the new drives may see prices tumble for the (still sector leading) 80GB X-25M drive which has been making my own Windows 7 RC equipped laptop sing all year (don't forget the Intel SSD firmware patch chaps).

So, as ever, it's a case of watch this space...
