SD Cards may soon get huge capacity and performance boosts from the impending SDXC standard but for now this will do us just nicely...

Flash guru SanDisk has announced that it will raise the speed bar on current SDHC (SD Higher Capacity) Cards with the launch of its latest 'Extreme' range which ups the maximum storage space to a whole 32GB and transfer rates to a screaming 30MB per second.

"The market for entry to mid-level DSLR cameras is growing, and SDHC is becoming the de-facto card format for these devices," said SanDisk retail product marketing director Susan Park. "Our card's 32GB of storage and up to 30MBps read & write speeds enable DSLR users to shoot without worrying about storage or speed limitations. SanDisk Extreme SDHC cards provide consumers with a more enjoyable user experience, letting them focus on what is really important - the images that they are capturing."

Marketing dogma aside, Park is right: the new Extreme card should prove a big help to SDHC based DSLRs like the Nikon D90 and D5000. It may also convince a few more DSLR manufacturers that the bulky CompactFlash memory standard is starting to become a thing of the past...

...or maybe only when the 300MBps data rates of SDXC touch down!

Hmm, at those prices they're a long way off being a proper replacement for CF, especially as you can buy a 50% faster one at less than a quarter the price.

Well, I doubt many 'entry level DSLR buyers' are going to be spending the same amount on their card as they did on their camera, good luck with that, Sandisk! Also, I dou... more
