Western Digital has announced the "world's first four terabyte external hard drive for P2P fanatics for creative professionals" and it certainly employs Mac design sensibilities (read: metallic + minimalist) to woo punters.

Based around a pair of 2TB Caviar Green HDDs, the 'My Book Studio Edition II' dual drive system comes in a RAID 0 configuration and offers four interfaces: eSATA, FireWire 800 and 400 as well as USB 2.0. By using the Green line users should expect reduced power consumption along with quiet operation while a useful capacity gauge has been added to show how much space is available at a glance.

"With 4 terabytes of capacity, photographers, graphic artists, videographers and home video enthusiasts alike will have the space they need to store hours of high definition videos as well as the performance they need for demanding video editing applications," said WD president of marketing Dale Pistilli building the hunger of Usenet aficionados.

The 4TB version of the My Book Studio Edition II goes on sale immediately for £599.99 and boasts a tidy five year warranty. My only concern? You can buy entry level NAS in this price bracket...

Update: Turns out the price is £429.99 - there was an error in the release - now that makes a sizeable difference...

Could you run this is a backup config eg RAID 1 (I think its raid 1 could b raid 0 - whichever 1 backs things up) - great technical terms :-). If you could that would be sweet to g... more

Its nice to have RAID as option but it is still a single point of failure no matter how you configure. I am in need of a storage upgrade but holding off until the inevitable price ... more
