SSDs have largely overlooked the 3.5in form factor so far, at least until OCZ came up with this monster...

The 'Colossus' is the highly appropriate name given to the company's first 3.5in solid state drive. Finished in a fetching metallic case, it will come in both 512GB and 1TB capacities with blisteringly quick read and writes speeds of around 265MB per second.


To keep cost down - of which we know nothing - OCZ has chosen to pair two SSDs in a RAID 0 array and "commissioned a new PCB design with flash chips and SSD controllers on them rather than simply hacking together a couple of existing SSDs in a larger box". An SATA II interface will be used, rather than PCI Express, as seen with the crazed 800MBps read/600MBps write Z-Drive.

The benefits adding a standard 3.5in model to OCZ should be huge. For a start it more easily fits typical desktop cases and also works with standard sized hot swappable drive bays. On top of this the low power draw plus cold and silent operation should prove mouth watering for enterprises running high end NAS setups.

The Colossus will launch in the approximately two months. Fingers crossed on those RRPs...

Pretty cool, although a pair of simple 2.5 to 3.5 converters would be far cheaper, I am sure! But in a couple of years this will be approaching mainsteam status...
