I would so like an SSD as the main boot/system drive in my desktop PC. When I see the right combination of reliability, speed and price then I will jump in.

I will be very keen to read the TR review of these drives ;)

How do these compare against say an SDHC card? Most netbooks have an SD card slot, and 32gb sd cards are pretty cheap.

Is the issue that you can not use an SD card as the primary drive?

I've just checked the Lojixx website and the prices seem much higher that quoted in your article - for example the 32GB SSD is selling for £92 (£80+vat) not £69.

They're a waste of money if they've got the current JMicron controller. Half a second to a second long pauses are unacceptible at this price for almost every type of use.

If they do manage to fix it with new firmware then I can't really see the 32GB version being that popular, Since you can get a good netbook now for £150-200 not many people will want to spend £70 extra on it, and 32GB is barely enough for vista and some programs on an ultraportable.

@Brian - SDHC cards can't be used as they have extremely limited write/re-write cycles and Vista would kill your card within a day or two, possibly less. If that were an option everyone would be doing it I'm afraid.
@Xiphias - we'll have to put your points to the test, but personally I don't see the need for more than 32GB on a netbook - besides you'd have to be suicidal to put Vista on it ;)

Not bad for an ultraportable, although the controller really is junk I could probably do better myself :-P

What would be really good is a nice inexpensive 64GB drive for a 13/14in laptop with the samsung controller, I think OCZ has my money if I decide to upgrade soon :-)

@xenos - a 32GB, even 16GB, Intel X-25M would do me just fine in a netbook. Come on Intel!

comment Gordon said on 22nd May 2009

@Simon - I'll check with them about that.

Update: Lojixx says the figures on its website are out of date and will be updated over the weekend. Yes, our article has the correct prices :)

What point is there in introducing new SSDs with JMicron controllers. Seems like a cynical jump on to the SSD bandwagon in order to flog 'em them to the unsuspecting Joe Public to me.

SSDs with JMicron controllers are perfectly fine for netbooks with Windows 7 RC - I intend using one in my new Mini 10v when it arrives.

I have now received my Silicon Power 32GB SSD and installed it in my Dell Mini 10v - here are the CrystalDiskMark scores running Windows 7 RC:

Seq read 104.2 MB/s write 51.42 MB/s
512K read 96.64 MB/s write 35.38 MB/s
4K read 8.016 MB/s write 1.501 MB/s

Anybody happen to know if these can be purchased from anywhere else? The Lojixx shop is down and I can't seem to find them anywhere.

comment Darfuria said on 10th August 2009

Jesus christ, their website is STILL down.

comment Simon Heather said on 11th August 2009

Just send them an e-mail - they are good at responding to queries.

comment Darfuria said on 12th August 2009

I've sent them three, now. From different e-mail addresses.
