I briefly referenced the mysterious Leyio last week, so what is it...?

Described as a 'Personal Sharing Device' (PSD), the Leyio is essentially the industry's first practical, secure, highly portable, rugged and wireless hard drive. It allows users to exchange files between Leyios with no more than a flick of the wrist, has a charge designed to last up to one month at a time and can even upload and download information from an integrated USB key.


How does it all work? Well the fancy wireless isn't what you'd expect since there's no WiFi or Bluetooth onboard because Leyio is actually the world's first Ultra Wideband device. Now for those in the know, you'll remember UWB has been struggling to get out the door for some time but it brings simple short range pairing and nippy transfer speeds of up to 10MBps while consuming very low levels of power. Ideal for a PSD.

Security for such a device however is vital so the Leyio cleverly integrated a fingerprint scanner and doubled it as a navigation system with finger swipes up, down, left and right moving through the UI and taps onto it operating like a click. From here a colour LCD shows drive contents (categorised by file type) and allows exchanged images to be previewed.

For flexibility, there's a USB port to transfer data to a PC or connect to standard USB drives while the aforementioned integrated key (dubbed the 'Shuttle') holds 2GB and can be detached and used to quickly download/upload files to and from the Leyio's 15GB flash memory.

Yep, Leyio is the portable hard drive we all wish we owned and perhaps unsurprisingly it does come with a premium £159 price tag. Still, if you're regularly on the move and want to wow the crowds with something truly different then grab your wallet because Leyio goes on sale this week.

Am I missing something here? If you have to use a usb stick to transfer stuff to and from it why not just carry a 16GB USB stick in the first place and cut out the middle man.
