Given their popularity with the military for many years I'm rather surprised to find this hasn't been done already...

Still in a surprising industry first Samsung has taken gold with the first self-encrypting line of solid state drives. They will be available in both 1.8in and 2.5in form factors with capacities ranging from 64GB to 256GB. Wave's Embassy management software is also bundled.

"Samsung has combined the tremendous performance advantages of solid state technology with integrated hardware encryption for drives designed especially for today's 'road warrior' professionals," said Samsung Semiconductor memory VP Jim Elliott. "Business users now get the best of performance and security in a single drive."

It's an easy line for Jim but an obvious one considering the overhead of encryption barely affects the performance of an SSD. The format also suits laptops with its low power draw and fast boot times making the tech an ideal fit (and again one I can't believe hasn't been done already).

Dell has immediately jumped on the bandwagon and will be offering the drives in its PCs imminently. Quite what they'll cost given the premium still attached to SSDs is another question entirely...
