SSDs (plus possibly netbooks) may well be the most exciting technology in 2009 so this takes some beating...

Making our heads spin somewhat is news that progressive flash specialist Super Talent has announced 'RAIDDrive' - a PCI Express based storage solution to produce one of the largest and fastest products we've seen to date.

Weighing it at a monstrous 2TB (2048GB) with a turbocharged DRAM cache and battery backed up data protection, the RAIDDrive connects through a PCIe 2.0 x8 interface to deliver sequential read speeds up to 1.2GBps and even faster sequential writes hitting 1.3GBps. Yes, we'd love to know more but sadly Super Talent is keeping that under wraps until June.

Interestingly, tempted consumers will be able to configure the drives with an internal RAID5 capability to deliver an extra level of data protection for mission critical applications and also specify exactly the amount of memory required.

Three families of RAIDDrive will hit the market initially: RAIDDrive ES (Enterprise Servers), RAIDDrive WS (Workstation) and RAIDDrive GS (for gamers).

"We are proud of the innovative intellectual property that our outstanding engineering team has developed," said Super Talent COO CH Lee. "The RAIDDrive is just the latest in a series of patented products which enable us to provide differentiated products to our customers."

Perfect or not is not actually important here (though we wish for the best) - for us the most interesting aspect is how SSD storage is making manufacturers think outside the box and after the dull trudge of HDDs over the years this is something for which we should be truly thankful...

Yeesh, get a ruler Super Talent. Now I'll just remortgage my liver, and be back with the cash. Suffice to say, all this benchmark-busting stuff, isn't much use to Joe Sch... more
