With the breakthroughs in Solid State drive (SSD) technology coming thick and fast this could be needed sooner rather than later...

Seagate has this week become the first company to demonstrate a complete implementation of 6Gbps (gigabits per second) SATA. In short this translates to almost 600MBps (megabytes per second) double that which can be achieved through SATA2, which tops out at 3Gbps.

Perhaps most encouragingly SATA3, as it is likely to become known (it is based on the revision 3.0 of the Serial ATA standard developed by the Serial ATA International Organisation), will be backwards compatible with both SATA and SATA2 and uses the same shaped connector. Furthermore, it will be both more power efficient and improve upon the native command queuing of its predecessors.

As for real world timeframes, despite the demo Seagate would only tease: "6Gb/sec SATA will get here just in time for hardcore PC users and gamers". A well trodden rumour however suggests it will be here before the end of the year. Intel has yet to announce support for 6Gbps SATA/SATA3 but AMD is already proclaiming its 750 chipset can be upgraded to handle the new standard.

SSD and HDD manufacturers now feel free to design us something to really test these new boundaries...
