How much better would this be than a £30 second hand PC tower with a RAID card and 4/6 internal drives? I guess power consumption would be an issue, but £400 buys a lot of electricity.....

I may be missing something, but if you're putting a full chip in there why doesn't it have a full OS and then become a server? If network attached storage is all you want then why the full blooded chip?

Tranquil PC have been doing this type of system for quite a while now.
Would be good to get a review: http://www.tranquilpc-shop.co.uk/acatalog/BAREBONE_SERVERS.html
dual intel atom, customisable ram and with 5 hard drive slots, While it does not have a fancy lcd screen it does have the extra hard drive slot and the ability to install any O/s you want
