Western Digital Unveils Record 2TB HDD

There has been crazy little fanfare for this behemoth, but fanfare we shall give it...

The 3.5in 'WD20EADS' is the world's first 2TB internal HDD and creator Western Digital has not only skipped any form of official press release but also begun shipping it to consumers (in Australia) without the slightest warning.

Interesting for such a giant, the WD20EADS is nippy too with a fast 7,200RPM spin speed ably backed up by 32MB of cache and an SATA II 3GBps interface. It also comes with a very reasonable $377.80 AUD RRP which roughly translates to £178 - something of a snip compared to the latest SSDs which still retail at around 3x/4x that for less than one tenth the capacity (despite their obvious benefits).

Unfortunately there is no word yet from WD as to when this humongous hard drive will appear in the rest of the world - primarily because there is simply no word from WD - but I suspect we'll start seeing it in limited quantities by early February.

As ever in these things: Seagate, ball's in your court...

Update: WD has now officially announced the drive and the key fact we learn is sadly pricing was wildly optimistic. It's actually 299 euros over here (approx. £279 *exchange rate heart attack*) so that convenience currently comes at a considerable cost. Is it worth it?
