When I wrote my TrustedReviews Christmas List I had this pinned to the very top: Intel's X25-M SSD and now it has just gotten even better...

Following up the launch of the 2.5in 80GB X25-M in September Intel has now announced that the larger 160GB edition has begun shipping while a super slim and light 1.8in version won't be far behind it.

Now for those not suitably excited at this development let me remind you of a few key specs: 250MB per second read times, 70MB per second writes times and in tests the fastest overall storage product we've ever tested. Throw in an SSD's famed silent operation, shock resistant technology, reduced power usage and weight and it makes current HDDs look so passé.

The snag naturally involves cost with the 80GB edition already retailing at the circa £350 mark and harder to find than a West Brom clean sheet so Intel has offered no clue just how much the 160GBer will bend your wallet. That said, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller: "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

i think the 'harder to find' bit is truer than the cost factor for some. I've been hunting for the x-25M for ages and i only found pre-order options on one uk websit... more
