So anyone not taking SSD seriously anymore...?
Following Samsung's move to put its 256GB SSD line into mass production Micron has announced some impressive one-upmanship today by not only doing the same but also stunning the solid state world with record breaking lab speeds.

Getting the easy bit out the way first: the MLC based C200 product line and nastily coded 256GB 'MTFDBAC256MAE-1C1' and 128GB 'MTFDBAA128MAE-1C1' are now being mass produced with hopes of a very late Q4 release in both 2.5in and 1.8in form factors. Performance of the range is impressive too with 220MB per second read and 100MB per second write. As for the biggie: pricing, sadly no news as yet.

Taking us into the future however is the remarkable news that Micron has managed to make a massive breakthrough with solid state memory that sees two SSDS with 16 data channels generate a total transfer speed in excess of 1GB (yes, gigabyte) per second. IOPS (input / output operations per second) are in excess of 200,000. Amusingly, the SATA II interface had to be dropped with the memory only attaining the bandwidth it needs via PCI Express! (screen grab above)
Of course the big question in all this is 'how far away is the tech'? Well, availability and pricing (perhaps unsurprisingly) were not disclosed but the tantalising news is Micron expects a retail product "soon"...

Provided you had the forsight to buy a motherboard with a spare PCI-E 4x or 16x slot in the first place. (1x only provides 250MB/s, or 500MB/s for v2.0)

Hopefully by the time this arrives I'll have saved enough money to afford a couple.
