At this point in time the more major memory giants who jump into the SSD arena the better, so welcome aboard Kingston...

In a welcome change to its usually conservative approach to new technologies, the storage maestro has announced it will be teaming up with chip guru and SSD big daddy Intel. That said, with a reported quarter of all Kingston's annual $4.5bn turnover coming from flash drives the motivation should be obvious to all.

Speaking to Mobile Tech Today, Kingston spokesman David Leong admitted the move "almost flies in the face of the usual Kingston model" but said "This is one market where we believe it will grow quite a bit. The opportunity was there to jump into it right now with Intel."

"We have had both an engineering and marketing relationship with Intel for more than a decade," added Leong. "We work together because we are all part of the same ecosystem."

We won't have to wait long for the first Kingston SSD either with Leong admitting that it will have models ready for both laptops and servers in Q4 (I'm guessing late Q4). Much as we'd love some solid facts about sizes, prices, performance and the like that juicy stuff was sadly withheld.

All good things...?
