SanDisk Launches First 16GB microSD HC Card

Headline kinda says it all really...
Still that wouldn't make for much of a news story so for those still slightly unclear about what is going here (heaven knows how?) SanDisk has launched the world's first 16GB microSD HC card (microSD Higher Capacity). Product code: 'SDSDQ-016G-E11M' for those who really want the detail.
Ok, so we've got that bit out of the way (twice) and the capacity - as is the wonderful pattern for flash memory - doubles the previous industry best of 8GB (12GB never did take off). The price will be a very reasonable £49.99, goes on sale immediately and it really does set the cat amongst the pigeons by giving the likes of the newly announced Android-based T-Mobile G1 the chance to match the iPhone 3G, Samsung i8510 and Nokia N96.

One note of caution however readers: only the newest handsets tend to support microSD HC capacities this big so best do your research before you lay out your cash. A good rule of thumb however is if a phone can support 8GB microSD HC it should be fine with 16GB. Smartphones like the BlackBerry Bold, Samsung Omnia and Nokia N96 all play nicely too and in the case of the latter means the potential of a 32GB handset. Very nice indeed.
So yes, this is a straightforward announcement but considering the capacity and the size (11 x 15 x 1 mm !) sometimes you just have to step back and say: Isn't technology incredible!
