While its interest in flash memory has seen it linked with the audacious purchase of SanDisk, Seagate is still showing plenty of love for its moving parts technologies...

To this end the company has today announced its brand spanking new and heavily reworked FreeAgent line of external storage drives and they are certainly looking the part. Let's pick the bones out of them:

Perhaps of most interest to users all round will be the 'FreeAgent Go' and 'FreeAgent Go for Mac' - the first external hard drive to come with their own iPod/iPhone-esque docking station while pocket friendly dimensions (12.5 x 80 x 130mm and 17.5 x 80 x 137.18mm respectively) do not stop them from reaching up to a whopping 500GB of storage capacity. Available in silver, red, blue and black finishes for Windows or silver only on the Mac they could set a few hearts aflutter.

Need even more space? Then the 'FreeAgent Desk' and 'FreeAgent Desk for Mac' will be more to your style offering zippy 7,200rpm drives with up to 1.5 terabytes of storage all in form factors that weigh just 1Kg.

Lastly, the 'FreeAgent XTreme' does exactly what its name suggests delivering up to a 3GB per second transfer rate over eSATA and yet still packing in capacities of up to 1.5TB. FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports add extra flexibility too though it will be a Windows centric product so Mac users are out of luck here.

All Seagate drives also sport better power efficiency, the option to encrypt stored data and come with healthy five year limited warranties.

The new family is scheduled to launch by next month with the Go drive starting from just $119.99 ($159.99 for the Mac edition), the Desks beginning at a mere $129.99 for 500GB ($169.99 for the Mac edition) and the XTreme topping things off at $159.99 for 500GB and maxing out at $299.99 for 1.5TB.

Impressive stuff.
