Fabless semiconductor company Indilinx has caused something of a stir with the announcement of IDX22 (codename 'Barefoot'), a SSD controller built using the 90nm process which offers read speeds of a breakneck 230MBps. Better still, this it's scalable.

Using more expensive SLC (single level cell) NAND flash the controller will not only offer 230MBps read speeds but also write at 170MBps. Using the much cheaper MLC (multi-level cell) method users will still get 200MBps read speeds and 160MBps write.

According to the company these speeds were "made possible by Indilinx’s unique architecture and technology, including independently operating 4 channels and external DRAM buffer. In addition, it enhances stability and reliability by using two types of hardware error-correcting code (ECC) of Reed-Solomon (RS) and Bose-Chadhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH)."

The final cherry on top is Barefoot (it's much cooler than IDX22) is the support for SSDs up to 512GB and compatibility with flash memory from Samsung, Toshiba, Hynix and Intel/Micron.

"Free from lock-up of exclusively dedicated SSD controller to a certain flash memory, they can have a buying power over flash vendors by segregating purchase of controller and flash memory. Also, our controller secures consistent performance regardless of a type of flash memory,”

Did I say that was the final cherry? I lied: mass production is scheduled for Q4.
