When OCZ stunned us by slashing the cost of its latest SSD drives by more than 50 per cent we prayed/begged/prepared animal sacrifices in the hope it would soon spread to other manufacturers. Well, Flossy's death was clearly worth it...*

Ridata (part of the Ritek group which owns Traxdata) is the welcome second company into the breach after it announced its 'Ultra-S Plus' series of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB SSDs will retail for just $169.90 (£84), $294.90 (£147) and $537.90 (£268) respectively. Oh yes.

These models are no cheap knock-offs either offering sizzling performance of 128MB per second read and 80MB per second write, well in excess of any standard HDD. A mean time between failure (MTBF) rate of 4,000,000 hours and a write endurance cycle of up to 1,000,000 should also have owners sleeping easy.

Launching in the US in late July, a UK release is expected soon after and also watch out for them via your favourite importers any minute. Start saying your goodbyes to your laptop hard drives boys and girls...
