Seagate Ushers In 1.5TB 3.5in HDD

Now here's something of a massive breakthrough for HDD technology: the world's first 3.5in 1.5 terabyte hard drive...

Named the 'Barracuda 7200.11' (below) this monstrous HDD is 50 per cent larger than any rival product announced before and the single largest capacity jump in more than 50 years of hard drive technology.


Built using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), this giant integrates four 375GB combined platters and has a 7,200rpm spin speed which makes it capable of remarkable 129MBps maximum data transfer rates which puts it up alongside the fastest SSDs. It's tough too, as Seagate claims the drive can withstand 1,000Gs and 350Gs in non-operational and operational modes respectively,

"Seagate is committed to powering the next generation of computing today with the planet's fastest, highest-capacity and most reliable storage solutions," said a chuffed sounding Michael Wingert, Seagate Executive VP and GM of its Personal Computer Business.

Also following the 1.5TBer, will be two 500GB 2.5in HDDs for laptops available with either 5,400rpm or 7,200rpm spin speeds. Their data transfer rates were not revealed but they can match their bigger brother in terms of G-Force protection. The 1.5TB 7200.11 will smash down in August so there's not long to wait while 2.5 inchers will ship under the more loose timeframe of 'Q4'.

Looks like HDDs solid state concession speech isn't quite ready to be written just yet...
