The famed King of Proprietary shares its Memory Stick designs with flash giant SanDisk and having just announced its first 8GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card today - a full 10 months after SanDisk's 8GBer - it probably wishes it didn't.
Of course M2 is the defacto standard on all modern Sony Ericsson handsets, so this catch-up is good news for the company and it claims users will be able to store a whopping 5,000 five megapixel images, 2,000 128kbps MP3 tracks or in excess of 88 hours of Mpeg4 video. Naturally different encoding rates will affect this though.
For what it's worth, Gameloft's 'Brain Challenge 2' is also being bundled with all new Sony M2 cards of 2GB and over along with a USB adaptor for PC (again, much as SanDisk has been doing for years).
Retailing pricing and an exact launch time remain under wraps so for the meantime SanDisk continues to keep the high end M2 market all to itself. Oh and did I mention it is currently working on a 16GB M2 card...?!
