Hitachi is ever so fond of a bold prediction and it is now upping its 4TB HDDs by 2011 guesstimate to 5TB models by 2010.

Nikkei Net is the site to bring us this update which also comes with the rather startling revelation by Hitachi storage guru Dr Yoshihiro Shiroishi that a pair of 5TB drives will "provide the same storage capacity as the human brain" (well, maybe Hugo's...).

Seriously however it will be interesting to see whether Hitachi can back up this claim or whether it simply feels the need to give confidence to long term investors scared by the relentless assault from SSD.

Personally I think a combination of the two is most likely and it won't be much fun in Hitachi's R&D lab right now where I suspect a number of sadomasochistic taskmasters are readying studded leather whips as we speak (too graphic?). Furthermore, while I don't want to sound like the most pessimistic guy in the room, SSD capacities are increasing at an exponential rate while their fall in prices is similarly breakneck (we're still stunned by that OCZ announcement).

Ultimately then, we applaud you Hitachi, but by 2010 we wonder if you might be backing the wrong horse...
