There is something rather fundamental we tend to forget in the fast developing SSD/HDD storage battle: SSDs can be any shape they want!

Capitalising on this oversight is Seagate legal target STEC which has announced fully featured 16GB and 32GB one inch laptop SSDs.

Dubbed the 'MACH4' line, they support both SATA and PATA connectivity and with read/write performance hitting 90MB and 55MB per second respectively are a match for any performance HDD and virtually all SSDs on the market. Power consumption is also predictably excellent using just 200 milliamps or 1W compared to the 12W required by a standard 7,200rpm ATA drive.

Sadly no prices or release dates for this diminutive duo have been released but with their product page already live on the STEC site (see link below) they shouldn't be long now.

Of course Samsung has already barked on about custom sized SSDs earlier in the year, but STEC has put its money where its mouth is. On the downside, manufacturers' desires to see their SSDs fit into any laptop chassis will likely mean the 1.8in and 2.5in faux-form factors continue for some time to come. Still, we've seen the future here people and we like it...
