There isn't a lot to say about desktop storage other than we like it big and we like it fast (did that come out how I think it did?), so tick two boxes for Hitachi's latest...

The 'Ultrastar 15K450' is something we really aren't used to seeing: a genuinely capacious 15,000rpm hard drive. In the case of the 15K450 the name really says it all: 450GB.

Now, aside from my sudden colon fetish (that also seemed to come out wrong), what catches the attention is Hitachi's claims that the 15K450 boasts a 30 per cent improvement in sequential throughput over its predecessor along with the options of either a super fast 3Gbps Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface or an even quicker a 4Gbps Fibre Channel one.

As a result average seek times are quoted as low as 3.3 milliseconds with fast rotational speeds reducing the average latency time to 2ms. There is also a hefty 16MB buffer. Speed isn't the drive's only benefit however with low noise operation promised and the company's Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) technology - it protects the drive head from sudden movements and forces - both aboard.

Naturally enough the 15K450 is being aimed at enterprise, but with specs like these I expect more than a few will find homes in high end gaming rigs. Prep your cheque books for a launch later this quarter.
