The outspoken Seagate chief exec has kicked off the week by laying into current industry belle SSD. Speaking to Fortune magazine he confused us all by declaring: "Realistically, I just don't see the flash notebook sell. We just don't see the proposition."

Faster access times, lower power draw, greater durability and less weight clearly not an easy concept for Bill to get his head around then. Of course we could understand this given that Seagate is the largest producer of standard HDDs, though Bill himself conceded back in August that "We have solid-state drives on every road map that we have."

Not content with befuddling us, the Sam Allardyce spit then went on to say if SSDs did indeed become popular (which with prices falling 40 per cent annually seems inevitable) Seagate has an answer: lawsuits. Watkins says he believes his company has patents in place covering the manner in which a "storage device communicates with a computer" and it hasn't gone after SSD makers already simply because there isn't enough value in the market yet.

Naturally enough this is 'Watkins World' however and I'd suggest to the amiable CEO that this is a more likely chain of events: 1. SSDs gain in popularity. 2. Seagate sues SSDs makers. 3. Settles out of court. 4. Seagate releases its own SSDs and the world moves on.

Ah Bill, you gotta love him...
