The SSD market is getting mighty crowded though with widespread retail drives still rare in the extreme we remain in a scenario of the more manufacturers the better. Especially when they make such a compelling case as OCZ...

Looking remarkably similar to the high end models announced by Samsung late last year (I suspect it's a licensing deal), the 'OCZ SATA II 2.5in' line is an impressive proposition.

With 120MBps and 100Mbps read and write speeds respectively and a lightweight (77g), durable design the range is targeted squarely at the notebook sector and though capacities are only 32GB and 64GB (128GB is increasingly en vogue) with two million hour mean time before failure (MTBF) rates they certainly offer an intriguing combo of performance and peace of mind.

"There are many benefits of solid state drive technology over traditional disk drives including superior speed, reliability, and power savings," commented Alex Mei, OCZ's Executive VP and CMO. "Our newest SATA II drives are designed to further extend the advantages of this technology offering enhanced performance for high-end mobile solutions."

As is typical with most SSD announcements we're still waiting on price and release details, but with the ranges' product page now live I'm sensing it's time to check on your savings...

Update: OCZ tells me both the 32GB and 64GB drives will be available at the end of the month with RRPs of $549 and $1,099 respectively. Ouch! Let's hope all those predicted price reductions kick in soon.
