Sony Claims It Can Boost HDD Capacities 5x

Fresh from its victory in the HD optical format war, the king of all things proprietary has announced a new breakthrough in hard drive technology which it claims will boost capacities by as much as 5x.
Despite choosing not to go into great detail for obvious reasons, Sony told Nikkei that it has unearthed a hybrid data recording method which employs both magnetic and optical technology. The result is a vastly more accurate process where data is written far smaller using a laser meaning greatly more bits can be held on any given area.
Sony says currently it can use this method to cram 125GB on a square inch. In real terms this would mean 1.6TB on an 2.5in laptop HDD currently capable of holding 320GB. So could we soon be looking at 5TB desktop HDDs and 2.5GB laptops HDDs? Sadly no.
In typical exciting-breakthrough-technology-style Sony hasn't put a date on the commercial roll-out of such hard drives or given any idea of whether they will cost (greatly) more than their current counterparts.
It had better be quick though given SSDs exponential approach...
