Yes, we've been here before...

Again beating out the likes of Seagate, Maxtor and Hitachi as it did with its 320GBer is Buffalo which has become the first company to release a half terabyte (500GB) ultra portable hard drive.

Visually identical to the rest of the MiniStation TurboUSB line, the 'HD-PS500U2' is none the less something of a technological marvel cramming what would amount to hefty desktop storage into a 127 x 84 x 20mm case weighing under 200g.

Like all Buffalo's MiniStation TurboUSB drives, the PS500U2 is no performance slouch either, eschewing the more typical 4,200rpm spin speeds found on most large portable drives for a faster 5,400rpm unit which can potentially boost data transfer rates by up to 64 per cent.

Avoiding the errors of some rival products, this mini monster is also true to its portable roots with a hardwearing, armoured finish, shock absorbent internal design and wrap around power over USB cable that removes the need for a separate power brick.

Security is covered with the company's own 'Secure Lock Ware Encryption' software for Windows onboard along with 'Memeo AutoBackup Software' for improved backup options, including regular system backup, scheduled backup and password protection. Mac users aren't left out either, since the PS500U2 is compatible with Leopard's Time Machine.

As expected, this new flagship comes at a premium price (£207 ex. VAT) but with a two year warranty as standard there is certainly peace of mind, plus the ego boost from knowing you've got the smallest, largest mini beast around…
