In June 2006 SDHC Cards were introduced. Despite not being backwards compatible with its ultra popular SD Card predecessors, the argument stood that the standard's huge 32GB ceiling would make it worth the sacrifice and bring longevity. 18 months later, it's all tapped out...

In some part we can thank Panasonic for this, since it announced a 32GB SDHC Card way back in August, but now SanDisk has stepped up to shoulder the blame with a 32GB monster of its own.

Despite its size, this beast is part of the company's Ultra II line meaning it is a quick mover offering read and write speeds of 15MBps - well up on the previous 10MBps read and 9MBps write speeds of previous Ultra IIs. In addition to the main event, SanDisk has also announced an 8GB version of its SanDisk Ultra II Plus flexible USB/SDHC card.

The 32GB Ultra II will retail for a suitably premium $349.99 when it ships in April with a 16GB version appearing in March for just $179.99. The 8GB Ultra II Plus will also turn up in March for $99.99. Given that there is still no sign of Panasonic's 32GB model the race to release the first maxed out SDHC card is now on...
