It's proving to be a very storage-y first week in 2008...

Making a strong case for the stay of execution in laptop moving parts hard drives in Hitachi which has today crossed a mighty boundary in creating the world's first 500GB 2.5in HDD.

The 'Travelstar 5K500' (which will also feature a 400GB model) is an SATA II/3Gbps line which hits all the right notes with a 12ms average read time, 5.5ms average latency and 0.7W power draw when idle (0.95W when active). On the downside, as could be expected, the line spins at just 5,400rpm when laptop performance nirvana is reached only at 7,200rpm.

Available worldwide in Q2, I can hear the cries of joy from heavy Usenetters now.

Of course with such an important breakthrough maker of virtually everything Asus has also been quick to declare itself Hitachi's new best friend. Coming soon will be revised versions of Asus' M50 and M70 multimedia laptops which will pack in two of these 500GB monsters creating the first 1TB portables.

Again, availability and pricing were not revealed, but 'Q2' and 'quite a lot' would seem intelligent guesses...
