The portable hard drive sector is probably the one storage area where manufacturers don't feel the dreaded chill of flash memory breathing down their necks, or so you'd think…

Confounding logic, capacity and cost therefore is the 'SHD-UHRS' from Buffalo - the first external SSD I've ever seen.

The USB 2.0 sporting drive offers - in solid state terms - a hefty 100GB though this isn't going to trouble Buffalo's own 320GB portable HDD offering. That said, with a footprint little larger than a credit card, silent operation, ultra low power requirements sated directly over USB and a piffling 60g weight this is an attract device.

On the other hand, if SSDs do have a weakness currently it is with their sustained data rates which can still be out performed by traditional HDDs so quite why you would choose solid state memory as your bulk storage medium of choice in 2007 is beyond me.

Also dealing a swift kick to the delicate and danglies of impractical SSD romantics out there is the price. Buffalo is charging a whopping 100,000¥ (€615) and for the same money you could buy two Buffalo 320GB portable HDDs and still have enough money left over for a 160GBer on top.

I still kinda want one though. Don't you…?
