With SSDs on the horizon and HDD cast as the ageing underdog more times than Rocky Balboa it's remarkable how platter based technology continues to surprise.

Taking the wind out of Samsung's recent announcement of a 1.3in HDD format is little-known-but-cutely-named Tomato which has unveiled the 'D-18': an 8.5mm thick 60GB portable hard drive - a seemingly impossible size/capacity combination.

Almost half the depth of an iPod Classic (ok at 13.5mm that's a bit of a stretch), the D-18 somehow manages to jam in a Toshiba 1.8in HDD (don't ask me how) and enhances its portability credentials even further as it requires no external power, garnering all its needs over USB.

The happy henna-ish inspired designs come in six colours (black, blue, pink, silver, green and orange), though before we get too excited it must be said there have to be serious questions about durability in a package so minuscule. Furthermore, Tomato currently has no plans to export the drives outside its native Korea - though expect the grey market to do a rip-roaring trade.

The D-18 goes on sale immediately for just 99,000 Won (approx. £50). SSD, the balls coming back at you once more with interest...
