After a fairly stagnant period for HDDs last year, 2007 has really seen them kick on - not only in capacity but also price...

Equalling both its more capacious laptop HDD and Buffalo's record portable HDD is Western Digital's impressive 320GB 'Passport'.

The portable USB2.0er measures just 129 x 79 x 15mm and weighs a mere 104g yet can hold the equivalent of 80,000 128Kbps songs or more than 24 hours of video. Differentiating it from the pack, the little giant also ships with Google's Desktop Search and Picasa pre-installed allowed for easy location and ordering of files.

Automatic synchronisation options and security are covered too, the latter via built in 128bit encryption - this may not be as high as Buffalo's 256bit AES but in reality both are virtually hack proof.

"The need for travel-friendly storage devices continues to be an area that is growing immensely with the advent of rich media content generated by consumers," said Jim Welsh, VP and GM of WD's branded products group. "It's not only music that's consuming space on desktops. Higher resolution pictures and HD videos eat up storage very quickly so we're excited to make a portable 320 GB solution available for consumers on the move."

A helpful sentiment, though not as helpful as WD's decision to price its latest flagship at just £139.99 - undercutting Buffalo's PS320U2 by a not-to-be-sniffed at £15. Working with both Mac and Windows OSes, the 320GB WD Passport goes on sale now. Get em while they're hot people.
