This isn't the first 320GB 2.5in HDD we've seen (that honour goes to Toshiba) but it is the first to hit the market so hats off to Western Digital.

The 'WD Scorpio 320GB' (model number: WB3200BEVS) takes the industry's gold medal and it ticks all the boxes I would expect from a new landmark capacity: SATA interface, 5,400RPM spin speed (you'll never see 7,200RPM on next capacity benchmarks), 8MB cache.

On top of this the Scorpio benefits from a number of Western Digital's exclusive technologies: 'WhisperDrive' which utilises seeking algorithms to reduce noise, 'ShockGuard' to protect the drive and data integrity when dropped, and 'IntelliSeek' which calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.

For a class leader pricing is also remarkably good with the model costing just $200 (under £100) at the company's online website.

You can pick up the WB3200BEVS now and it is drives like this which may just make SSDs have to wait a little longer for their days in the sun...
