New versions of the Momentus notebook hard drives and Cheetah SAS drives were also announced. Using perpendicular recording technology, the new Momentus 5400.4 now packs in up to 250GB on just two platters and becomes the highest capacity 2.5in drive available. Meanwhile, on the other end of the scale, the new Cheetah 15K.6 is set to be the fastest 3.5in hard drive available, with a 28 per cent increase in speed over previous models. The amount of power used per gigabyte has also dropped by 60 per cent, which will please those paying the electricity bill. The new drives will be available in 147GB, 300GB, and 450GB versions.

Finally, we come to the consumer product drives that are specially optimised for specific applications. Three new models have been announced, the DB35 DVR/Media Center hard drive, the SV35 video surveillance drive and the Digital Audio Video Experience, or D.A.V.E. drive is a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi enabled external storage device for mobile interaction.
Both the DB35 and SV35 are optimised for recording large amounts of video data but where the DB35 emphasises speedy playback as well, the SV35 is only interested in recording and is guaranteed not to drop a single frame of data from 16 simultaneous streams of video. Can you guess which one's which?*

D.A.V.E., which Gordon first spied back in February, is perhaps the most interesting of the bunch as it offers a way for us all to easily access masses of data using just our mobile phones or other mobile device. Currently available in up to 60GB capacities, the drives are meant to act as a central storage for all your media which you can then access via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. So, you just pop the drive in the bottom of your bag, and keep your sleek little mobile in your pocket. When you want to view the latest episode of your favourite show you just connect your phone to the drive and away you go. Unfortunately this technology is aimed at OEMs only so we'll have to wait for partners to produce devices before we can get hold of them.
