JVC Makes First DL Single Sided DVD-RW

JVC has just announced the world's first (Samsung must be miffed) 'single sided dual layer DVD-RW disc for data capable of storing large amounts of data through continuous rewriting' (a mouthful, I know).
Officially called the 'VD-WDL85GJ' (also a mouthful), it has a single sided capacity of 8.5GB, just like single sided dual layer DVD-R discs and 1.8x the capacity of conventional single sided DVDs. It is also good for 1000 complete burns and JVC has added a patented new hard coating which the company claims makes it 150x tougher than standard discs, even withstanding static electricity.
On the downside the first batch will only be sold in (I imagine costly) singles, copy at a mere 2x and work only using DVD drives compatible with the DVD-RW for dual layer 2.0 specification - ie: none yet. Still, with the media hitting shelves before the end of September expect the drives to soon follow suit.
JVC says sales of recordable DVDs are still skyrocketing with demand this year increasing by 21 per cent over 2006 to 495m re-writeable DVD discs, so I guess if you're a heavy backer upper this will make you rejoice. Personally however, I find all optical media sooooo last century.
