Samsung Mass Producing 1.8in 64GB SSDs

Bang on schedule here come Samsung's 64GB solid state hard drives for ultraportables...

"We see sharply increasing interest in SSDs among OEMs worldwide amid a growing push to launch premium SSD-based notebooks, particularly in the ultra-mobile category," said Jim Elliott, director of flash marketing at Samsung Semiconductor and he is wrong.

For many the 64GB capacity represents the first truly appealing SSD capacity: smaller than most moving parts drives, but ample enough that their benefits (which include lightening access times, reduced weight, ice cold running temperatures and increased durability) are worth the sacrifice. Interestingly, Samsung also said it expects the SSD market to increase at a remarkable 270 per cent pace industry wide between now and 2010 which would make it the largest growth segment in the NAND flash industry. Personally speaking, I wouldn't dispute that data one iota and actually see it as conservative.

Sadly Sammy hasn't yet revealed the price point for these 64GBers yet given that they will largely be taken by OEM demand initially but public demand is also said to be huge, something my racing heart and sweaty palms can empathise with...
