When I met SanDisk at IFA last year it was common – but off the record – knowledge that it would release a 64GB SSD in the summer of 2007. Right on schedule here it is…

Rightly touted as a ‘sweet spot’ for laptop storage, a 64GB SSD provides all the benefits associated with solid state memory such as low power draw, no heat, silent operation and greater durability and reliability yet with a reasonable amount of capacity.

Importantly, SanDisk will also be releasing drives in both 1.8in and 2.5in form factors meaning both mainstream and thin and light laptops are covered.

"Laptop manufacturers have requested more memory capacity for systems that use the Microsoft Vista platform, which can require a number of preloaded accessories and security suites," said Doreet Oren, SanDisk's Director of SSD Product Marketing. "Also, there is interest in developing laptops for gaming, and the SSD is well-suited for the performance and memory requirements of those users. Thus, by offering greater capacities on our SSD products, we are making our products more appealing to a wider customer base."

Sadly these drives will go out to OEMs first and there is no news when it might become a consumer offering so those hoping to upgrade will be looking at a whole new machine, not a drop in replacement. Which is a shame since these things would shift like hot cakes used to before McFlurrys came in and stole all their glory…
