Don't you just love this exponential memory game...

Back in 2000 I got my first (pre-release) sample from the very first batch of USB flash drives. It was 32MB. "What will I do with all this space?!" I proclaimed... seven years later I can have 250x that removable capacity on my phone.

Actually to be more precise: eight years later. Yep, that's the catch in Samsung's big announcement, it's 8GB microSD cards won't actually be market ready until mid 2008. Still, it won't be until around this time that handsets will really make good use of such size so let's not bob-sleigh before we can walk...

Anyway, back to the positive stuff: a 16MBps (that's megabytes) read speed, 6MBps write speed and consequently a rating which exceeds the flagship 'Speed Class 4 SDHC' standard by 50 per cent. Couple this with the fact that most microSD's operate at 'Speed Class 2 SDHC' (2MBps) and this is one grease lightening memory midget.

So now just two things to worry about. For us: that 12 month wait. For Samsung: the competition!
