First One Terabyte Desktop HDD On Sale Now

Hitachi said it would launch the world's first 3.5in one terabyte (1TB) hard drive, it said it would do it in Q2 this year and it promised a reasonable price. Check. Check. And, err... check-ish.

First, the good stuff. It's 25 per cent larger than anything that went before it (750GB was the previous benchmark) and it features a lightening quick 3Gbps SATA interface and industry topping 32MB buffer. The spin speed is a zippy 7,200RPM and there's an 8.5ms average seek time while the company's 'SMART' technology and quietening acoustics are employed to keep noise down to a minimum. For those using rather older systems a second version with PATA 133 will also soon be made available.

The downside, inevitably is price. For its £249.99 RRP you could buy two 750GB HDDs and have a small amount of cash left over. The upside is for those who have SFF systems which cannot fit a second hard drive or the hardcore storage aficionado (a phrase I just made up, but I have no doubt exists).
