Bullseye once again for IT's current golden boy.

Samsung has chalked up two more world records today after getting official on its 250GB 2.5in laptop hard drive (which we first got wind of here) and announcing a 120GB 1.8 incher for mobile devices (yes, that includes – potentially – iPods).

As far as the specs go the 'SpinPoint M5' 250GBer (above) spins at 5,400RPM, uses an SATA 1.5Gbps interface, comes with 8MB of cache and a zippy – if not lightening – 12ms average seek time. Power consumption is just 2W and the drive also spins at a sanity friendly 24dB when idle.

Dropping down a size, the 120GB 'SpinPoint N2' comes in 4,200RPM and 3,600RPM models (UMPC and PMP variants, I wonder?) and serve up an average seek time of 15ms. Power consumption in this model is particularly negligible at less than 1W and I hear Sammy plans to ship them to OEMs from July (about the time Creative and Apple should be updating their lines methinks hopes).

The M5 will beat the N2 out the gate since it is already shipping to OEMs (as we know). Samsung is unlikely to hold the 2.5in record for long since Fujitsu has a 300 gigger in the works, but I'm sure the class swot has something up its sleeve...
