While we have gotten used to 8GB of flash storage in our MP3 players it seems Toshiba's latest breakthrough could not only double that but also put similar amounts of storage into our mobile phones too.

The technowizardry which enables this is a long mooted move to 56 nanometre fabrication and this brings only benefits by reducing the physical size of the memory itself, improving performance, lowering power consumption and cutting cost. Neat eh?

Fleshing this out a little it will ultimately mean eight 2GB NAND flash modules can now be fitted into a single chip with the read and write speeds increased to 15MBps and 6MBps respectively. No actual energy figures were given but Tosh did say incorporating the memory into mobile phones was now eminently viable.

As for arrival dates: the company anticipates a 16GB solution being available sometime in Q3 with an eight gigabyte version ready this summer.

Slim, tasty and capacious handsets await!
